Born in the rolling countryside of Southern Indiana, the 220 Breakers roots reach deep into the history of American music. Four songwriters deliver their new traditional country originals with a rock and roll rhythm section and flavor the tunes with banjo, pedal steel and lots of brotherly harmony. The result is some good ole Boozy Americalia and Stoned Cold Country. This Bloomington 5 piece gets a lot of reactions like 'I thought I was back in the forties," and "this is the sound I grew up on," and "that's a great hat."

The group is built from the musical chemistry between the Payton Brothers. Ryan Payton struts on the bass like a Honky Tonk Prince and writes classic love songs. His lyrics are full of sweet talk and down home poetry. Jason Payton pulls big tones from his guitars and sings his own lovesick ballads, bluegrass shuffles or revved up country stompers.

Soul brother Tim Baker adds the giddy up banjo, stage antics, and witty banter. He rides his banjo like a stallion and his boisterous singing and picking gives a kick to the Breakers sound. Tim is also the singer for local folk favorites Carpenter and Clerk.

The pedal steel stylings of Matt Lundquist hover over the band like outer space around the earth. His simple melodies sing high and lonesome and his slide blues breaks honor the legacy of Duane Allman. He also leads rock and roll outfit Otto Mobile as well as playing pedal steel with TVMike and Odawas. His songs have good hooks and clever quirks.

Drummer Sam Pierce is the engine under the hood. He hits and kicks the rocking songs hard and then brushes the ballads softly and tenderly. The band is named in honor of his powers and skills as an electrician. He also keeps time in Leon Chance's Honky Tonk band.

The boys in the 220 Breakers have blue collar muscles and late night country charms. They write the kind of tunes you hear once and wake up humming. If you have ever wished that Keith Richards and Gram Parsons started a group, then the Breakers are your kind of band. You can't go back in time, but the Breakers can take you there and bring you back in the matter of a couple sets.
